Flyaway Garden

Flyaway Garden

This New Paltz, N.Y.–based indie-pop group centers on the visions of co-founders Kaitlin Van Pelt and Dan Wolfe, who craft shoegaze-oriented folk pop in timeless sound sketches. Their Bar/None label debut follows in the tradition of previous self-releases. The songs feel less structured than they are. The nuts and bolts of their operation are obscured by copious amounts of reverb and indistinct harmony vocals that float in and out of the mix. “Whisper” expands to five minutes for the album’s worthy centerpiece, while tracks such as “Shape,” “Portrait,” “Lifter,” and the wordless title song make for hypnotic music not yet jaded by commercial expectations.
