Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys

The brainchild of actor/pirate Johnny Depp and producer Hal Willner, this second volume of maritime songs features enough big names to pull just about every fan into its clutches. Shane MacGowan rights the ship with "Leaving of Liverpool," Beth Orton channels the dangerous waters of "River Come Down," Tom Waits is Tom Waits with fellow-shipmate Keith Richards on guitar for "Shenandoah," and Iggy Pop is his usual subversive self for the off-color "A*****e Rules the Navy." It all coalesces into one, long strange trip with a few lesser-known names also delivering the goods. However, this is a star-studded escapade, with Marianne Faithfull joining Kate & Anna McGarrigle on the conventionally beautiful "Flandyke Shore." Michael Stipe and Courtney Love turn in a hard-rocking "Rio Grande." Richard Thompson doesn't have to go far for "General Taylor." Todd Rundgren builds a rousing production for "Rolling Down to Old Maui." Tim Robbins is helped out on "Marianne" by Matthew Sweet and The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs. There are very few, if any, clunkers out of these 36 tracks
