For their third album, this Torrance, Calif.–based punk quartet commit the ultimate punk sin: signing to a (sort of) major label, Epitaph, and consenting to (kinda) slick production. While that might rankle the purists who've made Joyce Manor one of the SoCal scene's great upstart punk bands, Never Hungover Again is a blast. At 19 minutes, it's shorter than a sitcom, yet it's so suffused in hooks and snappy one-liners that you'll swear it's triple that length. Riffs like the one at the end of "Schley" take up residence in your head in an instant, and pretty much all 100 seconds of "Victoria" are memorable. With as much in common with The Smiths ("Heated Swimming Pool") as Fugazi ("Falling in Love Again"), Joyce Manor have the talent (and chutzpah) to transcend emo-punk's boundaries.
