Petra Goes to the Movies

Petra Haden comes from a musical family, and she uses her musical genes to do something innovative and interesting. She'd previously recorded an a cappella track-by-track cover of The Who Sell Out, and she's followed it with an album of movie themes. In strategic spots her father, Charlie Haden, joins her with non-vocal instruments, as do Brad Mehldau and Bill Frisell. The remainder of the music comes from Haden's throat. She even handles the vocal lines to "Goldfinger Main Title" with her capable singing. The scores that are already familiar to listeners might inspire the most awe, but if her performances can be heard free from association, it's obvious how brilliant these songs and performances are. "Carlotta's Gallop" from 8 1/2 builds to a dizzying climax. "God's Lonely Man" from Taxi Driver is pure intensity and a great blurring of instruments and voice. She even sings the sentimental "It Might Be You" from Tootsie as a sweet ballad, for a touch of the conventional. Whether it's "The Planet Krypton" from Superman or "Psycho Main Title," Haden approaches the music with sincerity and affection.
