FABRICLIVE 100: Kode9 & Burial

FABRICLIVE, the DJ mix series documenting London nightclub Fabric’s bass-heavy Friday-night programming, comes to a close with its 100th installment, tapping experimental club kingpin Kode9 and the reclusive Burial for an unusual back-to-back session. This mix bobs and weaves as though tugged by competing forces: An opening stretch of thundering South African gqom, a staple of Kode9’s Hyperdub label, slides sideways into an electroclash flashback from Luke Slater; shuddering jungle tunes alternate with coiled techno and vintage trance. The mixed portions suggest Kode9’s handiwork, while omnipresent vinyl crackle and gun-cock effects reveal Burial’s fingerprints. But this moody, dynamic mix resists being pulled apart; best simply to lean into the twists and turns. Like the great TV series, FABRICLIVE goes out on a cliffhanger, leaving more mysteries than answers.
