Using Jeremy Sams’s wonderfully communicative translation, Roderick Williams and Christopher Glynn serve up Schubert’s great song-cycle Winterreise in English. And very impressive it is – for its immediacy and ability to connect with an English-speaking audience; for Williams’s clarity of diction and total engagement with the narrative, and for the performers’ impressive rapport throughout the cycle. This is singing of a superior nature born of long experience of the work. Nothing will ever replace the German original but it is a valuable and vital way of presenting this masterpiece to an audience for whom a foreign language is a barrier.
