Sabougla Voices

Sabougla Voices

Leo Welch was born in 1923 in the Mississippi hill country. This 2014 album is his first release. His searing electric guitar drone is similar to those of other Mississippi hill country artists (and Fat Possum/Big Legal Mess labelmates), including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and T Model Ford. Welch performed in local blues bands until the mid-'70s, when he switched to gospel and began playing almost exclusively in churches. That said, he hasn't forsaken his blues roots, as his urgency and grit make clear. Rather, he now sets his rich, weathered voice to lyrics focused on religious redemption instead of more worldly subjects. Welch's gospel-blues hybrid is backed by a sparse yet powerful rhythm section of bass, drums, and organ (and some acoustic guitar), along with the female Sabougla Voices providing responses to Welch's calls. This album was cut mostly live in the studio and reflects the set he has played each Sunday for many years. This is a convincing and moving album by a lifelong musician comfortable with blending blues and gospel. It's further proof that the two have never been that far apart anyway.
