Breadwoman & Other Tales

Breadwoman & Other Tales

Recorded in the mid '80s, this collection pairs Anna Homler's incantations with Steve Moshier's ambient synthesizers and tape cut-ups. The eerie, drifting "Oo Nu Dah" suggests new age, but the duo's work is more experimental than most music in the genre: "Sirens" is a wordless stretch of wailing and creaking, and "Giyah" and "Ee Chê" incorporate the mechanical rhythms and queasy tones of early industrial music. Homler sings in an invented language, but it's all so deeply felt and compellingly atmospheric that nothing gets lost in translation.
