Less than 10 seconds into the free-jazz jolt of the opening “17 West,” it’s already clear that American cellist Tomeka Reid likes to tap the sweet spot between structure and chaos. On her quartet’s debut, Reid and guitarist Mary Halvorson flit and flutter like unsteady storms, while Jason Roebke’s rubbery upright bass progressions provide a sturdy anchor for drummer Tomas Fujiwara to swing around. Even moody pieces like “Glass Light” or the infectious “Woodlawn” contain a captivating mix of off-kilter “wrong” notes and accessible rhythms.
