Few DJs can turn the perennial chintz of Italo-disco into spiralling underground bangers that feel right at home in the techno tent. But Skatebård can—and does here in his breakthrough set at Dekmantel, an annual music festival hosted by the tastemaking Amsterdam record label. The Norwegian producer, known for sprawling, psychedelic sets that feel ever-so-slightly retro, engages with all of the Euro sound's classic ingredients—Technicolor synths, vocoder vocals, electro muscle—and twists them into gentle abstractions that feel mysterious, as if he’s daring you to continue writing off Italo’s neon palette. You’d be missing out if you did. In one surprisingly heavy-hitting hour, Bård proves that all those slinky synths and askew vocals deserve their main-stage moment.
