Hootie & The Blowfish were a pop-rock group in an era when many musicians instead went grunge. Darius Rucker’s voice stood out, and it was expected that he’d find his niche as a solo artist. Vintage soul music seemed likely, but contemporary country clicked instead, with Rucker straining less and singing relaxed and naturally. Here, his South Carolina roots show through on “Baby I’m Right,” a duet with Mallary Hope, while the title track nails the pathos, pedal steel, and harmonies necessary to make for a classic country tune. The deluxe edition adds “Down Here” and “It’s All Over,” two of the album’s most compelling tracks.
