Flute Passion: Schubert

Flute Passion: Schubert

Schubert may have written very little music for the solo flute, but that hasn’t stopped flute players from bumping up the opportunities with arrangements and transcriptions. Nadia Labrie, best known as one-half of the flute-and-guitar duo Similia, makes a delightful guide in an original Schubert work for flute, the Introduction and Variations on Trockne Blumen (a song from Die schöne Müllerin). She also makes a very convincing case for the flute’s alluring sound in the Arpeggione Sonata. A handful of transcriptions of favorite songs adds to the pleasure, with pianist Mathieu Gaudet a stylish partner.
