To understand Goat's motivations for crafting this album, look no further than the lyrics of his song “IDK” ("知影"): “One day I’ll understand the truth of life / quietly observe change and follow feelings.” One way to approach Goat's debut album Fantasia is like an autobiography, in the sense that the themes across the album are a reflection on his personal experiences and emotional development over the past 20 years. Goat's identity is firmly rooted in his small home city of Hualien, Taiwan—a city nestled between the mountains and the sea. Young residents of Hualien often pass their time in the surrounding natural environment, hiking in the mountains and camping on nearby beaches. Many of the transcendent sounds and concepts within the album are drawn from humble reflections on these everyday life experiences. Yet Hualien is more than just context. His relationship to himself, his community, and the world is interpreted through these experiences as part of a larger search for truth. And in this sense Goat sets himself apart from many of his much older, more experienced peers in the global hip-hop scene. Many of us already have, or soon will experience the anxiety of entering adulthood. The process of entering the world as an independent person puts everything to the test, as Goat muses in "Health & Happiness" ("健康快樂"). Who am I? What am I capable of? What are my values? What’s important to me? These feelings and their companion insecurities are in a word, scary. How do we find answers? How do we cope? In Fantasia, Goat tackles this modern crisis of self head-on, using his own 20 years of growth to create a personal philosophy that will last a lifetime.
