Night

Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s inspiration here comes from the solace he derives from New York at nighttime, and many of the tracks have emerged from improvisations recorded in the calm hours after dark. Gjeilo guides us through his home city’s “Quiet Streets,” a slow, insistent accompaniment beating out his steps. “Before Dawn” lays bare his love of Bach’s simple beauty, while “Skyline” is a love letter to New York’s gallery of high-rises, glistening in the moonlight. The album is rounded out by the minute-long “Nocturnal,” its rocking rhythm surrendering to sleep. Those who enjoy Gjeilo’s sacred choral works will relish these sumptuous, pared-down piano pieces.
