For Malian singer Sidiki Diabaté, making music isn't a passion—it's a destiny. Diabaté is the 72nd generation in his family to play kora, the 21-stringed West African lute. But Diabaté has never been content with convention; in the late '00s, he began shifting towards more modern sounds, releasing a string of playful hip-hop hits that nevertheless incorporated the earthy, fluttering strings of his family's legacy. A collaboration with his father, Toumani Diabaté, followed in 2014 and saw traditional Malian music infused with a contemporary attitude.
