Australian neo-soul artist Felivand, a.k.a. Felicity Vanderveen, wrote her debut EP, In Bloom, during what she described on social media as “a tough and interesting time” of her life. The result of that experience is a triumph of simplicity: Spare, jazzy guitars and downbeat rhythms leave all kinds of room for her supple vocals and thorny lyrics to shine. “I learnt to make friends with the deep end/But I still need some oxygen to bring me back up to the surface,” she sings on the woozy, intimate “C’est La Vie.” And on the atmospheric “Same Old,” she confronts someone close to her as if she's writing a letter she'll never send.
