Rhythm & Gutta

Rhythm & Gutta

It might seem like an unlikely jump in generations and geography, but the low-slung California spirit of G-funk has resurfaced three decades later in Sydney’s southwest suburb of Claymore. The 046 spent their formative years soaking up Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, and Warren G, and that influence comes through in full on the quartet’s second album. “Still G’s” borrows the signature G-funk synth and even the title refrain from Dr. Dre’s 1993 smash “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang,” and The 046 proudly christens their updating of the sound “Aus Funk”—complete with strong Australian accents. But Rhythm & Gutta moves well beyond mere nostalgia: “Test Us” flexes battle-ready swagger, while “My Block” and “Other Side” declare a warlike stance toward anyone who strays into their neighborhood. Expanding the album’s emotional spectrum, “Leave Me Alone” tackles another form of intrusion: unwanted advances from a lingering ex.
