Co-produced by Tom Petty at his home studio, this L.A. band’s revved-up power pop has a timeless feel. The marvelous “Birdwatching” brings together the muscle of early ‘70s classic rock and the electric propulsion of late ‘70s New York punk. While their peers aim for ethereal moods, The Shelters go for bite. On “Fortune Teller,” the guitars and harmonica cut through the track like flames through newsprint. The band is at its best when the amps are cranked and the engine is roaring, as on the bouncy Brit-flavored garage rock of “Rebel Heart.”
