We Can Do Anything

We Can Do Anything

A 15-year gap between their eighth and ninth albums didn’t weary this beloved folk-punk trio. Delving into two decades of cassettes and journals, singer/guitarist Gordon Gano found plenty of gems, and the group’s energy levels seem to have risen with time. “Memory” and “Foothills” retain the rattling feel, jumpy vocals, and rousing harmonies that have made the Femmes a perennial live draw, while “What You Really Mean”, an acoustic ballad with a classic ’50s feel and a sweetly crooned melody, showcases their gentle side.
