Lots of Loving

Lots of Loving

As a childhood friend of famed DJ and producer Tappa Zukie, Winston Brown was immersed in Kingston, Jamaica's burgeoning soundsystem culture at an early age. By his late teens he’d become an established voice on the scene, and in the late ‘70s he relocated to London, where his charismatic, patois-laced delivery and badman persona won him a devout following. As Ranking Dread, he cut a brace of remarkably consistent full-lengths; the most popular of these was 1980's Lots of Loving. This album benefited from an excellent set of rhythms produced by singing star turned label man Sugar Minott and performed by an ace set of Jamaican session men, including the unbeatable rhythm team of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare and veteran guitarist Bingy Bunny. This 2010 reissue includes the eight tracks from the album’s original release plus a handful of compelling bonus tracks, including the cavernous dub excursion “Dub Cut Lightning” and “First Cut," which features Dread extemporizing in fine style over a bass-heavy version of “The First Cut Is the Deepest."
