The first posthumous Junior Kimbrough album, God Knows I Tried is a drawer full of leftovers, but like a scrapbook it gives an essential picture of Kimbrough’s art. “I Gotta Try You Girl” and “How Do You Feel” chart Fat Possum’s attempts to wrangle Kimbrough’s sound in a studio. For the most part these recordings are noble failures. “How Do You Feel” is particularly unique, one long overture without a backbeat, sort of like hearing Kimbrough in his own rough pulpit. The reality was that Kimbrough’s home was the juke joint, specifically Junior’s Juke Joint, the roadhouse he operated in Chulahoma, Mississippi. The songs recorded there are amazing. “Keep On Braggin’” and “Tramp” are among Kimbrough’s mightiest performances — the former exemplifies his hypnotic Hill Country trance, the latter his brand of evil, groaning funk. Kimbrough made full use of a powerful rhythm section (comprised of sons and relatives) but his solo recordings are equally powerful. There is nothing in music quite like “I’m In Love With You,” a poignant, wandering love song that adheres only to its own ancient, dreaming logic.
