DJ Butter

About DJ Butter

As a hip-hop DJ in a city overridden with techno and house DJs, it's little surprise that DJ Butter has received little recognition among the mainstream. Along with most of the other DJs, producers, and particularly rappers composing Detroit's underground rap scene, Butter soon found himself the object of substantial interest following Eminem's breakthrough in 1999, as the rap community quickly looked to the city for more talent. With this sudden interest in Detroit hip-hop, Butter opportunistically released a mix album that featured tracks by the best rappers in Detroit. And taking a page from influential Detroit rap icon Esham, the DJ chose to focus on the dark side of Detroit rap, portraying himself on the cover of Kill the DJ as a crazed maniac. ~ Jason Birchmeier
