Following the release of an epic two-volume live set, La Parranda de Los Amigos, veteran banda sinaloense singer Chuy Lizárraga returns with a slickly recorded studio outing that uses the majestic textures of tubas and clarinets to maximum effect. Lizárraga’s tunes boast lyrics that are patently inappropriate but just as hilarious: On opening track “El Pisto Es Primero,” he explains to his girlfriend that she is important to him but still secondary to his consumption of alcohol. “La Gordita de los Tacos” and “La Vieja” are equally reckless, but Lizárraga also knows when to slow the tempo and open up his heart, as on “Prenda del Alma,” with its sumptuous brass arrangement.
