Chilean-born tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, one of the leading lights on the New York and global jazz scenes, expands from the chord-less band concept of Back Home, Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio, and Second Cycle to bring us Visions, a suite composed in honor of Frida Kahlo. (It’s worth noting that the Visions cover art was drawn by vocal sensation Cécile McLorin Salvant.) While the set owes much of its rhythmic density and propulsion to bassist Pablo Menares and drummer Tommy Crane, it is vibraphonist Joel Ross and pianist Sam Harris who help Aldana make Visions such a rewarding study in orchestration and harmonic color. At the center of the nimble group interplay is the leader’s authoritative horn, steering every intricate unison passage and taking flight in gripping solos that raise the temperature. It all comes together with exceptional clarity on “Elsewhere” and “Dos Casas, Un Puente”—though the one non-original, the classic ballad “Never Let Me Go,” does just as much to highlight Aldana’s grasp of the tenor saxophone’s lofty lineage.
