Sonhos da Esquina

Sonhos da Esquina

Trombonist Ryan Keberle continues to diversify with a group straight from São Paulo, featuring pianist Felipe Silveira, bassist Thiago Alves, and drummer Paulinho Vicente (who work regularly as a trio in their own right). The leader brings three quality originals to the table, “Campinas,” “Carbón Neutral,” and the title track, “Sonhos da Esquina” (“dreams of the corner,” or perhaps “corner dreams”). But much of the album is devoted to stunning melodies by Brazilian legends Milton Nascimento and Toninho Horta—and Keberle’s buoyant, lyrical legato horn truly captures their beauty. The two Horta selections, “Aquí, Oh!” and “Francisca,” are particularly upbeat and full of harmonic color. Nascimento’s “Cio da Terra,” co-written with the great Chico Buarque, receives a rhythmically perplexing, almost Gil Evans-like orchestration by Silveira, while Keberle arranges the beautiful ballad “Tarde” and the only track to feature trombone overdubs, “Clube da Esquina 2” (referencing Brazil’s rock-influenced Clube da Esquina or “corner club” scene of the ’70s).
