About Sweet Oblivion

Sweet Oblivion is progressive rock project --not a band--featuring American singer and songwriter Geoff Tate (ex: Queensryche) and Italian guitarist and bassist Simone Mularoni, keyboardist Emanuele Casali (both of veteran Italian progressive metal group DGM) and session drummer Paolo Caridi. Their sweeping, clamorous yet polished sound, bridges the opulent, hooky melodic metal of Tate's former band and the odd-metered cadences, dynamic shifts and instrumental pyrotechnics of DGM. The Frontiers Music label tasked Mularoni with writing music in the vintage Queensryche vein. He grabbed his bandmate Casali and enlisted jamming buddy Caridi for the drum chair, who had done work with the bands Angels and Demons and Killing Touch previously. Mularoni stated in a written interview that when he submitted the material to Tate, it was returned to him in a different form: bearing a closer resemblance to hip-hop than Queensryche. After some disagreement between guitarist, singer, and label, Tate recorded finished vocals (reportedly on his tour bus). A single and video for the song "True Colors" was issued to positive reviews in April, with the full length Sweet Oblivion featuring Geoff Tate arriving in June. ~ Thom Jurek
