The synthy, minimal post-punk of Naked Roommate existed mostly as a conceptual side project for members of Oakland punk band the World, but came into full fruition when that group called it quits in January of 2020. Naked Roommate wasted no time tapping into skeletal drum machine beats and shadowy no wave energy on their debut full-length, Do the Duvet, which was released later that year. Amber Sermeńo and Andy Jordan first hatched the concept of Naked Roommate in 2018 when they were playing in funky post-punk quintet the World. When the World disbanded, Jordan and Sermeńo turned their full focus to the project, working alone at first but soon enlisting bassist Alejandra Alcala and multi-instrumentalist Michael Zamora to help fill out the sound. Now a fully developed band, Naked Roommate recorded their debut album, Do the Duvet, blurring punky no wave influences with cold electro instrumentation. The LP was jointly released by the labels Trouble in Mind and Upset the Rhythm in September 2020. ~ Fred Thomas
