LOVE ALL COVER ALL

LOVE ALL COVER ALL

Pop music has always been the core inspiration for Fujii Kaze. As a teenager, he shared his versions of hits from both Japan and the West online. Nodding to his origins and as a present to fans in 2022, Kaze included a set of covers as a bonus to his second full-length album, LOVE ALL SERVE ALL. It was more than an add-on, however. These 11 songs underscore how important mainstream jams from the U.S. are to Kaze. Whereas his previous cover choices zigzagged between 20th-century standards and contemporary tunes, LOVE ALL COVER ALL goes big on 2010s staples. Using only his voice, piano, and a bit of multitracking to add a choir effect to some numbers, Kaze reinterprets dance-pop gems like Ariana Grande’s “no tears left to cry” and Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” Kaze ensures that the energy present in the originals comes through—even in his stripped-down arrangements. He did the same for 20th-century hits like “Hot Stuff” and “Just the Two of Us.” Kaze doesn’t perform these covers with any irony. Rather, LOVE ALL COVER ALL finds the J-pop mainstay tackling cuts with pure earnestness. He could have fun with certain details—the playfully whispered intro in his take of Britney Spears’ “Overprotected”—but delivered songs such as Post Malone’s “Circles” and Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” with the utmost sincerity. This set reaffirms not only Kaze’s musical virtuosity but also how deeply he respects mainstream pop music.
