Billed as a “spiritual sequel” to his 2015 album The Colours of Life, Montreal electronic musician CFCF’s Liquid Colours is, like its predecessor, an extended suite of seamlessly interconnected tracks in a single style, but here he swaps ambient for what he calls “‘corporatized’ pop jungle”—that is, the smooth, buoyant strain of drum ’n’ bass that soundtracked car commercials and oxygen bars in the late ’90s. The idea sounds tongue-in-cheek, but he’s clearly fond of the style’s vibraphones, fretless bass, and feathery acoustic guitars. Nodding to ambient, Japanese city pop, and vaporwave along with the liquid drum ’n’ bass pioneered by artists like LTJ Bukem, the album is a postmodern love letter that dances teasingly on the edge between kitsch and homage.
