Josey In Space (DJ Mix)

Following Japanese DJ Powder’s inaugural set for Beats in Space Records’ mix series, London’s Josey Rebelle steps up with an equally exploratory excursion. A longtime resident on Rinse FM, Rebelle is known for her cheerful disregard for genre boundaries, and she’s characteristically wide-ranging here, flitting from abstract dub to minimalist deep house, dreamy Detroit techno to pummeling EBM, shuffling garage to Latin-infused broken beat. It’s a lot of ground to cover, but what might feel forced with another DJ at the helm unfolds naturally here. She has a knack for linking complementary moods across divergent musical styles, and key sonic themes—pensive synth pads, nervous syncopations, playful rhythmic flourishes—tend to weave through the mix, trading off with each other and resurfacing every few tracks. The mix’s second half is particularly inspired, thanks to standout tracks like Loraine James’ flickering “Glitch Bitch” and Shy One’s jazzy “Route II Romeos”; the rolling drum ’n’ bass of Rogue Unit’s “Dance of the Sarooes (Nookie Remix)” proves the perfect climax for a steady rise in energy levels. But even here, she’s got a last trick up her sleeve, following that euphoric breakbeat catharsis by sinking back into the billowing mattress of Lex Amor’s “Praises”—a neo-soul comedown to bring racing hearts back to resting tempo.
