Land of Talk’s output may be sporadic—Indistinct Conversations is just the Montreal indie rock trio’s second album in a decade—but they’re unerringly consistent in both aesthetic and quality. Now a good 15 years removed from the moment when all eyes were on Montreal’s indie rock scene, and when their band really took shape, singer/guitarist Elizabeth Powell has settled comfortably into a dreamy jangle-pop sound that’s equally alluring and enigmatic: “Oh, please be diaphanous,” they sing on the opening reverie “Diaphanous.” The rest of Indistinct Conversations dutifully follows suit with 11 tracks that are light and airy in execution but emotionally heavy in impact, whether they’re grappling with insomnia on the restless roots rock of “Weight of That Weekend” or making like a shoegaze Fleetwood Mac on the dramatic devotional “Footnotes.”
