Following up his 2019 debut, Calls to Action, in-demand bassist Harish Raghavan (Vijay Iyer, Ambrose Akinmusire) partners once again with Joel Ross on vibraphone but otherwise varies his personnel and sonic conception. Rather than piano, Raghavan uses guitar, enlisting Charles Altura in combination with tenor saxophonist Morgan Guerin, whose EWI (electronic wind instrument) on several tracks injects a whole other color to the fleet unisons and dense counterpoint that course through Raghavan’s writing. Drummer Eric Harland, who has featured Raghavan extensively as a sideman, reciprocates here with subtle command as he executes the seamlessly pivoting rhythms built into Raghavan’s improvising structures. This has an electrifying effect on Ross and Altura as they spar and trade, reaching virtuosic heights. Ross’ switch to marimba on the slow, hypnotic title track is an added twist.
