Ask for Chaos

New York jazz-guitar virtuoso Gilad Hekselman puts the sounds of two very different trios into play on this all-original set. ZuperOctave, with Aaron Parks on keys and Kush Abadey on drums, has an ethereal electro-jazz bent, as heard on “VBlues,” “Tokyo Cookie,” and “Clap Clap.” Hekselman uses an octave pedal to make his lower two strings function as a bass, giving the group a round and full sound, while Abadey lends futuristic touches with electronic drum pads. Then there’s the elegant lyricism of the more traditional gHex Trio, with bassist Rick Rosato and drummer Jonathan Pinson. On “It Will Get Better,” “Do Re Mi Fa Sol,” and a Brazilian-tinged tribute to Milton Nascimento, Hekselman plays with the poise and fire of a young master.
