Good Luck & True Love

Good Luck & True Love

Reckless Kelly opens its seventh studio album with “Give It a Try,” a catchy country-rock tune that resonates with the warm sounds of ‘70s AM radio twang. Guitars slide and distort over steady-pedaling rhythms as Willy Braun humbly concedes to an unrequited love interest while keeping his chin up. In the similarly melodic and confessional “Save Me from Myself,” Braun admits he needs to be rescued from his vices and ponders the tough people in his life who’ve inspired him with their strength and carefree attitudes. Braun’s penchant for penning a good narrative surfaces in the hard-driving “She Likes Money, He Likes Love,” an empathetic look at a professional golddigger and her lonelyhearted sugar daddy. (Check out the Chuck Berry-inspired guitar work here and that snarling lead.) In “I Never Liked St. Valentine,” Braun and band simmer down with an acoustic number; its lyrics inject a sour-grapes sentiment into a tongue-in-cheek rip on the patron saint of sappy greeting cards. “New Moon over Nashville” cleverly acknowledges Music City’s sea change.
