Doug Tuttle

Doug Tuttle

Following both a romantic breakup and the dissolution of his band Mmoss, Doug Tuttle retreated into a home studio and, we might presume, wrote his heart out. A year later, this self-titled debut saw daylight, blinking with kaleidoscope eyes at the outside world that had somehow continued while Tuttle worked in a milieu of jangling, twinkling paisley-patterned sound. Not far removed from the psychedelic influences he mined in Mmoss, this collection leans toward a heavily Byrds-like vibe, with shimmering guitars and sparkling tambourines (especially notable on “I Will Leave”). Tuttle’s easy voice is both a bit sunbaked and soaked in early-morning dew. Twin leads, ’60s-style keyboards, and various effects and studio wizardry have songs like “Where You Plant Your Love” and “Lasting Away” dripping with lysergic goodness, while the omniscient spirit of Syd Barrett haunts “Leave Your Body” and the Beatles-flavored “I Won’t Do.” Tuttle’s many and varied strengths shine on the robust “Turn Your Love,” with churning organs and thumping percussion anchoring a Neil Young–esque guitar jam for a glorious six minutes.
