On the Corner Where You Live

On the Corner Where You Live

Formed in Melbourne, The Paper Kites are a quintet who specialize in low-key indie made for long drives and overcast skies. Their fourth album, On the Corner Where You Live, makes its presence known through tasteful guitar and piano, he/she vocal interplay by lead singers Sam Bentley and Christina Lacy, an occasional lilting saxophone, even atmospheric noise of trains and rain. They know drama—songs like “Mess We Made” and “Deep Burn Blue” have depth of sound and emotion that would work well in a John Hughes film. And “Does It Ever Cross Your Mind” carries emotional heft, with Bentley’s tender vocal on par with Gordon Lightfoot or Ben Gibbard.
