Da Revolution

Da Revolution

With 2009’s Da Revolution, hip-hop and hiplife duo R2Bees—comprised of singer Mugeez and rapper Omar Sterling—began their journey as one of Ghanaian music’s greatest contemporary exports. Following their first single “Yawa Gal”, they followed up with the Wande Coal-assisted “Kiss Your Hand”, which went on to win the coveted Afropop Song Of The Year at the 2011 Ghana Music Awards. With both these tracks displaying the group’s entertaining fusion of styles, they would hold listeners in good stead for Da Revolution’s blend of Afrobeats, hip-hop, reggae, R&B and highlife. “Africa” (a collab with Amaka) was a Caribbean-tinged pan-African anthem that joined the heartfelt Anderson-assisted “One More Chance” and percussive “Radio” as further singles. With 12 more songs helmed by acclaimed producer KillBeatz, the album saw the group craft songs in English, Twi and Pidgin alongside features as diverse as Tuga, Sarkodie, K Switch, Samini and Yaw Siki. This eclectic approach helped mark the localisation of musical styles on the continent and ushered in an unabated, decade-long presence on Ghana’s music scene for the Tema natives.
