Big Lonesome

Big Lonesome

Big Lonesome was to be another album by Marshall Chapman with help from guitarist Tim Krekel who had been a member of Chapman’s band, the Love Slaves, and who co-wrote several tunes for this album. Except Krekel passed away from cancer and Chapman was forced to finish the album alone. It is dedicated to him and when Chapman sings Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” it’s nearly too close to home. Chapman is an industry veteran with stacks of critical notices but never the breakthrough hit needed to meet the masses. The title track, one of two cuts here that feature Krekel’s vocals, is a country quickstep that keeps a joyous bounce. “Down to Mexico” slows things for full effect. “Going Away Party,” a Cindy Walker cover, sashays with a hint of blues. “Sick of Myself” features Krekel’s son Jason taking his father’s place as Chapman teases him with true warmth. The album ends with a live track recorded on May 30, 2009 of “I Love Everybody” that is the last time the two sang together. It’s a barnburner and a reminder of happier times.
