ill tapes, Vol. 1

Born out of experiments in chopping up vinyl and jamming together, hip-hop and neo-soul band Till Apes’ ill tapes, Vol. 1 is as playful as the title’s spoonerism suggests. The beat tape rounds up nine tracks, mostly instrumental, for a dose of feel-good grooves drawing from a cornucopia of sounds. Driven chiefly by Doc.Awes, Soorya Praveen and Sange Wangchuk, it opens with the fist-tight grooves of “A Captive Audience” and piles on Afro-jazz influences with “Be Who”. “Traffic” features triumphant saxophone and “That’s Wine...(I Think)” is pensive beat-building at its finest.
