Peace & Love

Peace & Love

Dadawah were less an independent recording outfit than they were a collaboration between two distinct musical entities, the deeply traditional nyabinghi outfit Ras Michael & The Sons of Negus and the house band at Kingston’s Federal Recording studio, which included such luminaries as guitarist Willie Lindo, drummer Paul Williams and keyboardist and bandleader Lloyd Charmers. Peace & Love marked the recording debut of singer and Rastafari poet Ras Michaels, and like nearly everything that Michaels has set to tape over the span of his four decade long career, the album is permeated by an atmosphere of deep solemnity and palpable religious conviction that is startling even for a work recorded in 1974, a time when Rastafarianism was rapidly gaining ground amongst Jamaican musicians. The album is notable for its staggeringly slow tempos, complex nyabinghi polyrhythms and the haunting improvisations of guitarist Willie Lindo; together they lend Peace & Love a spectral, near psychedelic ambience that is unique in all reggae.
