DJ-Kicks: Stacey Pullen (DJ Mix)

DJ-Kicks: Stacey Pullen (DJ Mix)

Released in 1996, Stacey Pullen’s DJ-Kicks contribution was just the fifth instalment in the series, yet the third by a Detroit techno DJ, following mixes from Carl Craig and Claude Young. Perhaps motivated by the pressure of following in those footsteps, Pullen delivers a set that’s Detroit to the core, full of the fast, furious style of mixing—distinguished by quick cuts, spinbacks and intricate blends—that Motor City DJs are famous for. His set list draws from all over, tapping the minimalism of Frankfurt’s Acid Jesus and the unhinged bleeps of Brighton’s Cristian Vogel along with the lush, Detroit-inspired grooves of Dutch producers Vince Watson and Sterac. But the set doesn’t scrimp on the sounds tearing up Detroit clubs in the mid-’90s, like Kenny Larkin’s rushing “Q” and Derrick May and Darryl Wynn’s anthemic “R-Theme”, plus tough, lapel-grabbing tunes from Pullen projects Kosmic Messenger and Silent Phase. It’s a thrilling mix from start to finish, and a reminder that even as techno began spreading around the world, ’90s Detroit remained its spiritual home.
