When award-winning pop legend Glenn Fredly passed away in April 2020, he left an illustrious 25-year legacy that cemented him as one of Indonesia’s most important artists. He started out winning childhood talent competitions and became known for his jazz and R&B-influenced vocals and songwriting flair, with “Januari”, “Terserah” and “Akhir Cerita Cinta” proudly sitting in the canon of Indonesian pop. But success alone wasn’t enough. Fredly was compelled to use his platform to highlight both social issues and his Eastern Indonesian cultural roots and fought passionately for musicians’ rights.
