Journeys to the New World: Hispanic Sacred Music from the 16th & 17th Centuries

The Queen’s Six (two countertenors, two tenors and two basses) take us on a journey from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. After the brutal conquest came the Spanish invaders’ desire to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity—and music was one of their most powerful, and successful, tools. Eight composers are featured here, only four of whom actually travelled to the New World, but all of their music was central to the Spanish quest. From Christobal de Morales to Francisco López Capillas, this is music of immense spiritual fervour and The Queen’s Six sing it with wonderfully restrained passion in a beautiful recording.
