About Lol Coxhill

A strikingly original improvisor, Lol Coxhill's fiercely independent approach to his music has always been leavened by his droll sense of humour and broad-minded eclecticism. Coxhill first attracted attention in the 1950s, playing soprano saxophone in a wide variety of bands. Equally at home with R&B singers, rock groups, and free jazz ensembles, in the '70s and '80s Coxhill played with musicians as diverse as Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood Of Breath, Derek Bailey, AMM, Kevin Ayers, and Evan Parker. He worked frequently with pianist Steve Miller, with whom he had played in the short-lived Delivery, and later became a member of two regular groups, the Recedents (with Mike Cooper and Roger Turner) and the Melody 4. In the early '80s, Coxhill served a short stint as a member of the punk group, the Damned. In the '90s he played early jazz with bass player Dave Green, and continued his work in free improvisation both solo and with the Recedents.
