About Denny Zeitlin

An engaging, often exploratory pianist, Denny Zeitlin began his career in the 1960s crafting intimate, deeply harmonic acoustic jazz. While issuing albums like 1964's Cathexis and 1967's Zeitgeist, he also balanced his highly respected musical career with his other profession as a practicing psychiatrist and professor. Later experimentations with electronics, as well as forays into classical composition and jazz-rock, fueled Zeitlin's creative engine, informing his soundtrack to the classic 1978 sci-fi/horror remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Though he remains a highly inventive performer, over his 50-year career he has come back around to making thoughtful, delicately rendered acoustic jazz on albums like 2014's trio date Stairway to the Stars and 2016's Wayne Shorter tribute Early Wayne. He has also collaborated on projects with drummer George Marsh, including 2021's Telepathy. Solo piano performances are also a regular focus for Zeitlin, as with 2023's Crazy Rhythms: Exploring George Gershwin.
