Shadow of the Sun

Shadow of the Sun

Relocating to Portland, Ore., from the psychedelic center of San Francisco made Moon Duo, with new drummer John Jeffrey, only more determined to explore their trippy side. Here, “Free the Skull,” “Zero,” “Animal,” and the bonus track “Cross the Way” turn up the aggression; and whether certain tracks seem to be influenced by Joy Division, The Teardrop Explodes, The Stooges, or Spacemen 3, they all come out as some of the finest music of Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada’s career. If the album openers “Wilding” and “Night Beat” suggest motorik space travel, the foreboding organs and crusty electric guitars show that they locked in tight in their new basement for this third album, which is as good as it gets.
