About The Stoneman Family

The story of the Stoneman Family is a classic slice of Americana. Patriarch Ernest “Pop” Stoneman--a virtuosic autoharp player from Appalachia--recorded for the legendary Okeh label in the 1920s, including his million-selling folk song, “The Sinking Of The Titanic.” Stoneman recorded up a storm in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and then retired from music to focus on carpentry and supporting his wife Hattie and their many children. An appearance on a quiz show in ’56 spurred his return to the business, when he, Hattie, and five of their kids became the Stoneman Family and appeared at festivals and folk clubs around the country. They scored several country hits in the ‘60s, and daughter Roni Stoneman became a featured cast member of the HEE-HAW television show.
