Setting up and recording from home for his Apple Music Home Session hardly fazed Birmingham-born rapper-on-the-rise Wesley Joseph. “Sometimes doing things with limits inspires unusual yet more original ways of making a particular sound,” he tells Apple Music. “I’ve recorded vocals in the shower (without the water on) for reverb, used tights as pop filters, and smacked a pair of Vans on my bin as tom drums. Anything is worth doing to get an edge, no matter how dumb it seems.” You’ll find plenty of that DIY spirit here, as the rapper, songwriter, producer, and filmmaker returns to “Ghostin’” and “Thrilla,” two of the tracks that have confirmed Joseph as a formidable talent. “Ghostin’” gets a languid, atmospheric rework—an easy soundtrack to hazy summer evenings post-lockdown—while Joseph brings brightness to the bass-quaking “Thrilla.” Revisiting both was a revealing experience. “These songs together demonstrate a good contrast of emotions that make me up as a whole,” he says. “They’re really special to me. I got to go back to the start and re-explore directions I took the first time, discovering new avenues and feelings for the songs completely. It was moving to make new moments out of the songs I know so well.”
