Beethoven 32: Sonata No. 1 (Visual Album)

Beethoven 32: Sonata No. 1 (Visual Album)

Playing a beautiful sounding Fazioli, Boris Giltburg starts out on a journey through all of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, each performance to be released as a visual album. Filmed simply, but very effectively, from the right-hand end of the keyboard, the video reveals his fingers on the keys and the rapt expression as he plays (without music). The four-movement F Minor Sonata is dedicated to Beethoven’s teacher Haydn, and it draws on the same overtly classical language. Giltburg is a fine guide to the piece and his elegant technique is put to excellent use. If you don’t know the sonatas, or even if you do, this is a project for Beethoven Year that’s well worth following.
