About Carlos Sadness

A Spanish singer, songwriter, and illustrator who blends bright percussive pop with thoughtful indie folk, Carlos Sadness found national success following the release of his 2015 album La Idea Salvaje. His mix of poetic lyrics and sunny, acoustic-driven pop earned him a widespread fan base who helped propel his 2018 follow-up album, Diferentes Tipos de Luz, to major chart success in his home country and Mexico. While working in Barcelona as an illustrator, he began his music career under the name Shinoflow, issuing a pair of alternative rap albums in 2002 and 2007. In 2010, after spending some time in Los Angeles, he returned to Spain with the intention of reinventing his music to incorporate a more melodic, indie folk and pop-driven sound. Following a pair of collaborations with Spanish singer and actress Bebe, he signed with Sony Entertainment and issued the Atraes a los Relámpagos EP in early 2011, still using the Shinoflow name. Having successfully transitioned into his new sound, he rebranded himself as Carlos Sadness the following year with the album Ciencias Celestes. A mix of driving rock and ukulele-fueled folk-pop, Ciencias Celestes helped establish Sadness as a national presence and by the end of that year he was even starring in an advertising campaign for San Miguel Beer. An EP, Monteperdido, appeared in 2014, followed in 2015 by the full-length La Idea Salvaje which proved to be his breakout release. With a hit album on the charts and a significant streaming presence online, Sadness became a bona fide headlining act and mainstay on the Spanish festival scene throughout 2016 and even published a book, Anatomías Íntimas, later that year. He landed another hit with his 2017 single, the gentle acoustic "Amor Papaya," and toured the U.S. Sadness returned in 2018 with his third full-length, Diferentes Tipos de Luz, reaching number two on the Spanish charts and number three in Mexico. Following a series of tours that included appearances in Latin America, he returned with the stand-alone single "Isla Morenita" in early 2019. ~ Timothy Monger
